Lesson Plans for Dec. 8-12 & Dec. 15-19

It is hard to believe that we have just two weeks left of school before our break! Next week we will be reading Zebra's World and What Do You Do With a Tail Like This? from the Journeys Reading Series. I will also include the informational text, Animal Babies in Grasslands. The unit can be found here.
We will read Zebra's World and use a tree map to write facts about zebras. For the story What Do You Do With a Tail Like This?, TSW recall details from the story by drawing pictures of the animals in the story on the web. After reading Animal Babies in Grasslands, TSW write about the animals in the story and we will compare and contrast zebras and lions.

For Phonics, I plan to review three alphabet letters/sounds each day and we will sort pictures by beginning sounds in the pocket chart.

Dec. 15-19 is our Gingerbread Week!
We will read The Gingerbread Man, Gingerbread Girl, Gingerbread Baby, and Gingerbread Friends. The unit for these activities is here.

Lesson Plans - Nov. 24-25

This week will be a short one for our class. We will be reading A Turkey for Thanksgiving and recalling some key details about the story during our writing follow-ups. Our centers are Thanksgiving themed, as well. The unit can be found here and also includes Mathematics centers. In Mathematics we will be learning how to play Racing Bears from Investigations.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of the year. I enjoy doing activities with my students to learn about and celebrate this holiday. Here are some fun things I have planned for the next few weeks. Parents will be invited to our Thanksgiving Celebration on Nov. 21st.

 The students will write about what they are thankful for and create the turkey project.
This will be our hallway display for the month.

We will be making our stuffed turkey to use as a centerpiece for our tables during the Celebration event.

I did this project when I was a SAHM with the girls. I got the turkey picture from the Martha Stewart website. They will stuff the bag with paper and fringe the feathers.  I will fan the feathers, staple them together and hot glue them to the back of the bag.

We use plain noodles and colored beads to make our necklaces.

The string is tied to a clothespin to prevent all the noodles and beads from sliding off.

We use tape to help measure the length of string needed.

The headbands are made with strips decorated with paint dots and a feather.

We punch a hole in the back and the feather slips right in to keep the headband closed.

At the Thanksgiving Celebration, the boys will wear vests. These were made using small men's v-neck t-shirts. Just dye them a light brown, cut the sleeves off, and fringe the bottom. I ask the boys to wear khaki pants or jeans.

The girls wear dresses. These were made using a medium men's t-shirts. Just dye them light brown and fringe the sleeves. I ask my girls to wear a dress, khaki pants, or jeans.

The Thanksgiving Celebration consists of the students wearing the costumes and performing several songs we have learned so far (Alphafriends, Heidisongs, Dr. Jean songs and a few Totline songs about Thanksgiving and turkeys). Then the students will sit at the tables and enjoy a light snack of popcorn, cheese cubes, and grapes. Last year, the students created and ate turkey cookies and we have served turkey slices, cheese, grapes, rolls, popcorn and a dessert in previous years. Many years ago I organized a traditional Thanksgiving meal with turkey, dressing, sides, and pumpkin pie, but the students did not seem to like to eat those foods. This year, we decided just to serve what they will actually eat that did not require any cooking.

Our Teepee is used as a reading spot. One student can sit inside and read books using a flashlight. They really think it is a special treat when it is their turn. 
After Thanksgiving, we plan to decorate it with candy and create a gingerbread house for December.

The students decorate a turkey feather as a family project. This is mom's turkey and I will post mine as soon as I get it completed. 

Lesson Plans - Nov. 10-14

This week we will be reading David's Drawing and Mouse Shapes from Journeys 2.10. I am including the book A Bed for the Winter on Thursday and Friday to discuss animal homes. We plan to continue the animal homes theme and read the books Turtle Splash and Home for a Tiger, Home for a Bear next week instead of Jump into January. We will be studying that book in January.
